A Community of Disciples
has Five Pastoral Purposes

Jesus gave us the perfect model for a parish: his twelve disciples. In the Great Commandment and the Great Commission Jesus gave us, his disciples, five pastoral purposes for a holistic and balanced missionary Church.

The Five Pastoral Purposes are:

WORSHIP the Lord - "You shall love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind"

WELFARE of others - "You shall love your neighbour as yourself"

Proclaim the WORD - "Go...and make disciples of all nations"

WELCOME all - "Baptise them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit"

Grow in WISDOM - "...teach them to observe all that I have commanded you"

An effective Community of Disciples fulfils all five purposes to become the Church that Christ intends us to be. These purposes are interdependent and if any one is weak, a parish will struggle to fulfil its mission.
